This projects started when the people from Clarke’s Bar and Dining Room got a bee in their bonnet about having a Parklet. After first appearing in San Francisco in 2005, Parklets have popped up across the globe in many different shapes and sizes. Working closely with City officials, the Clarke’s team came up with a challenging brief; seating and standing area, planters, bike parking and a skate element, all in one parking space!
The result is a Eucalyptus deck with seating and standing, a planter for herbs and veggies, a bike rack and a steel rail for safety from the road, which sometimes doubles as a skate rail. After almost 6 months in place the Parklet is still providing a small oasis of greenery and outdoor public space in the Cape Town CBD.
